WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF COFFEE?

Its hard to say exactly when coffee was first enjoyed by humans, but we do have some information concerning its earliest recorded discovery and use. Some of the earliest histories we have speak of the origins of Arabica coffee beans. These beans were found in what is known as modern day Ethiopia, and can be found to this day growing wild in the rain forests of that region. Often, these coffee beans were made use of in food items, rather than being consumed as a beverage. One way or another, these plants found their way into Arabia, and were widely used as a medicine before being used by many as a refreshing and invigorating drink. 

Coffee use abounded in ancient Arabia for a long period of time, with the ancient Arabians establishing houses of coffee. They went to a great deal on trouble to try to monopolize coffee and its production, and were successful for some time. Eventually, though, coffee found its way out of the Middle East and to India, where cultivation flourished as more and more people discovered the plant and its many uses. 

Coffee found its way onto the European continent sometime early in the middle ages, and immediately grew in popularity, with many coffee serving establishments coming into being to supply the burgeoning demand for the brew. Such was the regard for coffee that great efforts was expended to establish coffee growing plantations in other regions of the planet.

WHAT ARE SOME VARIETIES OF COFEE?

There are so many different varieties and shades of coffee that listing them all would be a major undertaking. Luckily, we can classify most types of coffee into three major varieties. These are, the Robusta, the Arabica, and the Blended. 

Robustas come in the widest varieties, and grow most readily in lower altitudes. Though it is not considered to belong to the gourmet class, it does contain close to twice the caffeine content of that found in Arabicas, and therefore is widely used as an additive to other blends to take advantage of this characteristic. These can be bought in almost any location.

Arabica coffees are the highest quality coffees in the world. They thrive in higher elevations and are well known for their intense flavors as well as their rich aromas. These plants tend to need more care as they are cultivated, but the end result is well worth the effort. These are usually somewhat more expensive, but can be purchased in many locations, and even online.

Blended coffees are just what the name implies, blends of different varieties which suit each other in terms of flavor, aroma, and effect. Blending coffee is considered a fine art by some, and a good blend of coffee usually quickly creates a following. Many people make a habit of purchasing many different types for their own personal review.

WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF COFFEE?

As we are all aware, coffee contains caffeine. Caffeine has some well known effects, many which are useful. Caffeine use will promote mental alertness and can be a source of energy. It is a well known diuretic, and this property can be a useful one in many situations. Caffeine’s effect as a promoter of thermogenenis and its appetite suppressing qualities make it an attractive weight loss health supplement. And of course, a nice cup of joe can be enjoyed simply for its great taste and tantalizing smell.

HOW DO YOU MAKE A GOOD BATCH OF ICED COFFEE AT HOME?

Even though many people drink their coffee hot, everyone can appreciate the value of a nice cup of iced coffee. There are a couple of schools of thought on how to make it, the two basic ones being the hot brew and the cold brew methods. Lets start with the cold brew method. With this method, the coffee grounds are placed into a container and cold water is added. This mixture is allowed to sit and steep for eight hours or more. At this point, the mixture is put through a strainer, filtering out the grounds. The coffee which has been strained out is then added to a container of ice, and a sweetener of your choice is added, as well as any desired flavorings or dairy products.

With the hot brew method, the coffee is prepared as normal in a coffee maker. Immediately after brewing, the sweetener of choice is added to make sure it rapidly and thoroughly dissolves. Any desired flavorings may also be added at this time. At this point, the brew is refrigerated for enough time to properly cool. After cooling, it is then dispensed over ice, and at this time some choose to add a dairy product.

Whichever method you choose to use, one thing is certain : A good cup of iced coffee is one of life’s great joys.
